Social Responsibility and Involvement

PETROTEL-LUKOIL Refinery Continues to Support the Community

Together with most companies in the energy sector, PETROTEL–LUKOIL Refinery continues to be involved in the life of community through activities focused on areas such as ecology, culture, spirituality, sport and beyond.

In 2019, PETROTEL–LUKOIL has been actively involved in the projects of communities in the locality of Ploiesti and Prahova County. The refinery, along with the employees on the refinery’s platform, carried out a series of volunteering activities. The novelty was the implementation of a ‘PROJECT DEDICATED TO COMMUNITIES’, through which LUKOIL granted to young people and/or associations grants worth USD 6,000 each. The respective grants are intended to support a project or initiative in the following directions: ecology, culture, spirituality, sport.

The results are notable, being already visible. They include the following:

  • Creation of the ecology and anthropology centre in Cheia, within the ‘Flori de mina’ Museum;
  • The Centre for Robotics and Innovation within the ‘Elie Radu’ College, Ploiesti;
  • The project ‘Always on the move – Fuel for life!’ gathers children from Prahova County, who play sports and move, free of charge, along with breathing and therapy exercises;
  • In terms of spirituality, two young students promote the popular traditions by making known in villages and schools the authentic Romanian dances and costumes, through a true dance school: ‘Brau Muntenesc’ is a school not only for young people, but also for adults (www.braumuntenesc.com);
  • Construction of a new playground within the ‘Constantin Stere’ Memorial Park (in December 2019), the playground being dedicated to the little ones and using the range of high-security materials (anti-trauma rubber) and age-appropriate play modules.

The refinery continued to financially support the project ‘Eco-attitude’, officially launched on April 29, 2015 by the Ministry of Environment.

Also, PETROTEL-LUKOIL supports the activity of the ‘Ciresarii’ orphanages and together with the employees on the refinery platform they organize their own volunteering campaigns for the ‘Prahova Association of people with disabilities’.

Planting, in the area of the former landfill of the municipality of Ploiesti, today materializes as follows: 35 thousand trees planted by students from several schools in Ploiesti. About this project and about the enthusiastic children who have made a real tree-line over the course of 5 years, a film was launched at the Charity Ball on March 7, organized by the initiators of the afforestation project, ‘Rotary Club Ploiesti’, through its President, Octavian Anghel.

The PETROTEL-LUKOIL refinery continued to support the ECO SCHOOL project, this time with the children from the rural area of Prahova County, under the coordination of the Ploiesti Environmental Agency, managing to organize summer courses on geological, environmental topics, and also on first aid, with the support of specialists from the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU).

The Prahova Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIPH) has awarded PETROTEL-LUKOIL, as a top representative of the oil industry, but also as a good communicator and active participant in the social life of the community, three trophies.

At the same time, in 2019, a Cooperation Agreement was signed between the Prahova Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Nijninovgorod Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Russia, which facilitates economic and cultural cooperation and relations.

The social dialogue also continued in the press, with the mass media’s greatest interest being given to social responsibility. On the third place from the point of view of interest was an intensely debated topic – pollution.

Last but not least, a tribute to one of the oldest refineries is the 115 YEAR HISTORY EXHIBITION, an exhibition dedicated to the PETROTEL-LUKOIL REFINERY and maintained throughout the summer, organized together with the PETROLEM MUSEUM OF PLOIEȘTI, an exhibition that brought together not only pages of history, but also old exhibits and specialists who launched generations of oilmen with the help of the Refinery, and also the tradition of oilmen from the Prahova County region.

Air quality monitoring stations

At the request of the Ministry of the Environment, PETROTEL–LUKOIL Refinery purchased three air quality monitoring stations.

Two of them have already been installed: one on Apelor street in Ploiesti, and the other in the locality of Moara Noua, on the eastern belt of the city. A third station is located in Obor area and will be put into operation soon.

The device will monitor substances such as powders, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, benzene, toluene and others, and the information will be transmitted to the Prahova Environmental Protection Agency.
