Three Seas Initiative – The Development of Strategic Projects in the Energy Sector

Dan Dragos Dragan – Secretary of State in the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Business Environment (MEEMA), attended a meeting with the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cornel Feruta, and representatives of EximBank. The discussions were held having as topic the new projects proposed on the list of the Three Seas Initiative (3SI), in the MEEMA area of responsibility, which will be promoted on October 19 this year, within the Three Seas Initiative Summit to be held in Tallinn, Estonia.

The fifth 3SI Summit will take place in Tallinn, following to be attended by heads of states and governments of the 12 countries located between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria.

3SI aims at developing infrastructure in the energy, transport, and digital sectors, targeting new investments, economic growth, and energy security.

Dan Dragos Dragan presented the projects in the energy sector proposed to be promoted and funded from the 3SI Fund. The official pointed out the relevance of these projects in a national and regional context in ensuring the balancing of the energy system, in order to strengthen electricity supply safety and to integrate renewables in line with the European Green Deal. At the same time, the Secretary of State emphasized the availability and support that MEEMA grants for the implementation of energy projects, which will support both the economic development and the energy independence of Romania.

 

Background

In the context of preparations for the organization of the fifth Summit of the Initiative, expected to take place in Tallinn, Estonia (October 19-20, 2020), the Prime Minister of Romania, Ludovic Orban, on November 14, 2019 approved the reorganization and reactivation of the Working Group at Government level to support Romania’s participation in 3SI, under the coordination of Deputy Prime Minister Raluca Turcan.

The Working Group aims to monitor and coordinate, at government level, the projects in which Romania is involved within the Three Seas Initiative and the actions at the Executive level aimed at implementing the 3SI objectives, analyzing and supporting the proper functioning of its tools, as well as the 3SI Investment Fund, and ensuring a coordinated promotion abroad of Romania’s interests within the Initiative, including in relation to the Business Forum of the Initiative, whose third edition will take place within the Summit in Tallinn.
