ANRMPSG-University of Petrosani Partnership
Development of the Mining Sector and CO2 Geological Storage
The management of the National Agency for Mineral Resources, Petroleum, and Geological Storage (ANRMPSG) received a visit from a delegation from the University of Petrosani, the only higher education institution in Romania that trains specialists in the mining field.
The meeting aimed to initiate a strategic institutional partnership focused on training and improving human resources, as well as developing joint projects in the field of mining and geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2), in line with recent European regulations such as the CRMA (Critical Raw Materials Act) and NZIA (Net Zero Industry Act).
The main areas of cooperation discussed included: organizing training courses for ANRMPSG specialists; promoting and developing joint projects in the field of mining and carbon storage technologies; setting up joint teams to analyze tailing ponds and dumps; partnerships for the development of technical documentation for prospecting, exploration, and exploitation.
Adriana Petcu, President of ANRMPSG, emphasized the importance of collaboration, saying: “I believe that today’s discussions on a future partnership with the University of Petrosani have been beneficial and useful, and the proposed collaboration aims to develop more applied analysis of the mining sector and to strengthen expertise in this field through an active exchange of knowledge between academia and institutions.”
In his turn, the rector of the University of Petrosani, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Sorin Mihai Radu, emphasized the strategic role of this cooperation: “The University of Petrosani assumes its mission to contribute to the modernization and sustainability of the Romanian mining industry. The partnership with ANRMPSG will bring added value both in training future engineers and in developing innovative solutions to today’s challenges – from responsible resource exploitation to the deployment of carbon storage technologies.”
This initiative marks an important step in adapting the Romanian mining industry to the European requirements for energy transition and strategic resource management. The project is being launched at a time when the European Union is accelerating the energy transition by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and ensuring access to critical raw materials for industry and green technologies. The conflict in Ukraine and tensions in global energy markets have exposed Europe’s vulnerability and the urgent need for domestic resources and carbon storage technologies. In this context, Romania has the opportunity to capitalize on its mining tradition and academic expertise to build an industrial model compatible with the requirements of the European Green Deal, but also with the new EU energy security objectives.
