Odfjell Drilling’s new semi-submersible rig to work for Aker BP

Odfjell Drilling has taken delivery of Deepsea Nordkapp semi-submersible from Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea.

Deepsea Nordkapp is the latest addition to Odfjell Drilling’s fleet of harsh environment drilling units. The semi-submersible is an enhanced Moss Maritime CS-60 design, winterized and purposely built for harsh environment areas. The unit will meet Odfjell Drilling’s requirements for delivering highly efficient operations.

On January 7 Deepsea Nordkapp started on its voyage to the Norwegian Continental Shelf for its 2+2-year contract with Aker BP.

Commencement of drilling operations is expected to take place in Q2 2019.

“We are very pleased to take delivery of Deepsea Nordkapp and we look forward to start operations for Aker BP later this year. Deepsea Nordkapp is an important contribution to the Alliance with Aker BP and we are well prepared to ensure safe and efficient operations,“ says Simen Lieungh, CEO of Odfjell Drilling AS.

Odfjell Drilling’s fleet of high-tech offshore drilling rigs and drill-ships is developed to the highest standards, designed for harsh environments and/or deep-water operations, and constitutes the most up to date portfolio of drilling assets in the industry.

The sixth-generation semi-submersibles have a high degree of logistical independence, ensuring that they are custom-built to deliver cost-effective operations in the world’s most challenging drilling environments, such as remote North Sea areas.

About Deepsea Nordkapp

Odfjell Drilling purchased Deepsea Nordkapp, former called drilling unit Stena Mixmax, for USD 505 million in April 2018.

The rig is equipped for ATA mooring from 100 meters – 500 meters, and can operate in DP mode in 300m – 2000m water. The rig has a large deck area, and capacities for efficient development drilling and completion. The derrick hoisting capacity is 1250 ton, and the 1200-ton setback capacity can store drill-strings and casings which are prepared offline. The derrick hoisting system is the ‘dual draw-work system’, same as the Deepsea Atlantic/Stavanger/Aberdeen. This provides fast, redundant hoisting and redundant active compensating.

Large deck and tank capacities for drilling fluid, brine and base oil ensure reduced need for supplies. The rig is built to DNV Class requirements, and designed for worldwide operations. It meets the latest NMD and PSA regulations and UK HSE.
