Strengthening Romania-Serbia Power Transmission Grids Interconnection

The second circuit of the 400 kV Resita (RO)-Pancevo (RS) overhead (OHL) double-circuit power line, i.e. circuit 1, started commercial operation on January 29, 2025, marking an important step in strengthening the interconnection of the Romanian and Serbian power transmission grids. With the full commercial operation of the 400 kV Resita-Pancevo OHL, Romania’s cross-border exchange capacity with Serbia reaches up to 1000 MW.

Thus, the 400 kV Resita-Pancevo OHL becomes the 11th 400 kV interconnection line between Romania and neighbouring countries, reaffirming Transelectrica’s commitment to energy infrastructure development and regional electricity market integration.

The full commercial operation of the interconnection line between Resita and Pancevo was realized within the framework of the second phase of the project for the construction of the 400 kV level in the Resita Electrical Substation, which will be fully completed by the end of the first quarter of this year.

Last November last year, circuit 2 of the 400 kV Resita-Pancevo OHL was commercially operationalized, following the partial commissioning of the new 400 kV Resita substation.

The 400 kV Resita-Pancevo Overhead Power Line has a significant contribution to the strengthening of the National Power System and the South-Eastern European grid, respectively it reduces cross-border congestion at the border between the two power systems, Romanian and Serbian, increases the security of electricity supply, increases the transfer capacity between Romania and Serbia and improves regional energy exchanges. At the same time, the 400 kV Resita-Pancevo Overhead Power Line creates the technical and operational framework for the connection of new consumers and producers of electricity to the grid.

400 kV Resita-Pancevo OHL has a total length of 131 kilometres, of which 63 kilometres are on Romanian territory.
