First Megawatt of PV Power from Electrocentrale Borzesti

Electrocentrale Borzesti recently marked a historic moment with the commissioning of its first megawatt of photovoltaic power, 15 years after it had stopped generating electricity. This has been made possible by an investment of around EUR 30 million.

“The last day of electricity production using fuel oil as raw material took place at Electrocentrale Borzesti on December 11th, 2009, so after 15 years, the object of activity remains the same, but the source is now a renewable one, representing an important step in the transition to clean energy for the future,” said Doru Voicu, Strategy Director at Renovatio.

“Electrocentrale Borzesti will become the most important hub for renewable energy in Romania, with active exploitation of alternative resources, with potential in the area,” Doru Voicu also said.

Renovatio, one of the main players in the field of solar energy and green technology in Romania, plans to complete the photovoltaic project at Electrocentrale Borzesti at the end of April 2024, with an installed capacity of 50 MW.

The project foresees the installation of about 75,000 photovoltaic panels, with a production of 70,000 MWh/year, which could supply 350,000 household consumers (with a monthly consumption of 200kWh) for one year.

At Borzesti, a further 50 MW will be installed in stages, and by the end of 2028, a total of up to 1,000 MW of capacity will be developed in Galati County.

The funds of about EUR 30 million needed to build the photovoltaic park in Borzesti came from Renovatio’s own sources and bank loans.

OMV Petrom recently signed the acquisition of a 50% stake in Electrocentrale Borzesti from RNV Infrastructure.
